Character strengths survey

A free survey to help you understand what your ultimate strengths are as they relate to your core virtues and things you value.

Focusing on building and leveraging your strengths as opposed to improving your weaknesses is a key strategy in becoming your best self and living your best life. Scientists and researchers, Christopher Peterson and Martin Seligman, first attempted to document a measure of humanist ideals of virtue in an empirical, rigorously scientific manner in their 2004 book Character Strengths and Virtues (CSV) .

“In the same way that the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is used to assess and facilitate research on mental disorders, CSV is intended to provide a theoretical framework to assist in developing practical applications for positive psychology” (thank you Wikipedia).

To do this they reviewed all the historical and classical works on ethics, virtues and moral behaviors from the beginning of time and found 6 virtues and 24 corresponding character strengths that have been common across history, cultures and countries.

Understanding what virtues you are naturally drawn to, and which corresponding characters are your natural strengths will help to be your best self and live your best life.

This is a free 10 minute survey from VIA Institute on Character, a non profit dedicated to promoting the 24 character strengths. The survey will guide you through a series of short questions related to each of the 24 character strengths and provide you with a free report of your top signature, middle and lower strengths.

You will then have the option to purchase additional detailed reports. I don’t recommend the Via Me Profile as it is mostly just the same content that you would get if you click through to the detail of each character strength on the website. If you are a coach, consultant, therapist or just generally have an interest in knowing more (hello fellow Wisdomists!), then the $40 VIA Pro report does offer a bit more detail and analysis regarding your signature strengths and associated virtues. Again, the $50 Me + Pro package is not necessary as the Me content can be found for free on the website.

Interested in what the survey had to say about me? Unsurprisingly, all of my signature and middle strengths were categorized under Wisdom and Transcendence with my top 3 signature strengths all belonging to Wisdom including: Creativity, Perspective and Love of Learning. This is good news for someone who built a unique business around learning, researching, creating, writing and sharing ideas…related to finding a connection to something greater in life. I guess I’m in the right spot 🙂

What about you? Take the survey to figure out what your greatest character strengths are, and if you feel up to it. Leave your results with your review. With each review your communicating to our community what has the most value and what doesn’t. It’s the best way we can improve the Resource Library.
